THOUSANDS of motorcyclists geared up for the annual Melbourne Toy Run motorbike ride, delivering charity and Christmas presents for those who needed it most over the festive season.

The Melbourne Toy Run attracted more than 1000 bikers who begun their journey from Victoria Park, Abbotsford, in a loop that also took in long part of the Eastern Fwy, Yarra Boulevard and Johnston St.

Volunteers from the Independent Riders Group donated all toys, money and food hampers collected today to The Father Bob Maguire Foundation who help homeless youth.

Father Bob described the event as “spectacular” with a “strong community spirit”.

“It’s a terrific way of helping people in need, especially this time of year,” he said.

“What a celebration of good will and humanity.”

Father Bob said members of the community donated toys, tins of food and money to those less fortunate, but his favourite part was seeing all the toys.

“Toys bring out magic and imagination,” he said.

Independent Riders Group site manager and volunteer Bernie Bickerton said Sunday’s Toy Run raised between $14,000 to $15,000.

“It was a great success, we couldn’t have asked for a better day,” he said.

“We received great support from all members for the community that allowed the event to happen and run so smoothly.”
